Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy

What is Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy is an evidence-based rehabilitation technique that allows patients to build strength and muscle using significantly lighter loads than traditional strength training. By applying a specialized cuff to the upper arm or upper leg, BFR partially restricts blood flow during exercise—creating a powerful training stimulus while reducing stress on joints and healing tissues.

At our clinic, we use the Suji BFR system, a clinically advanced, FDA-cleared device designed specifically for rehabilitation settings. The Suji system precisely regulates pressure based on each individual, ensuring safe, controlled, and personalized treatment throughout every session.

BFR is especially beneficial for patients recovering from:

  • Surgery
  • Injury
  • Pain (and may not yet tolerate heavy resistance)

Benefits of BFR Therapy include:

  • Builds strength with lighter weights - achieves strength gains using low-load exercises, reducing stress on joints and healing tissues.

  • Preserves and rebuilds muscle - helps prevent muscle loss after surgery or injury and supports faster muscle recovery.

  • Accelerates rehabilitation - allows patients to begin effective strengthening earlier in the rehab process.

  • Improves muscle endurance - enhances fatigue resistance and functional capacity during daily activities and sport.

  • Supports pain-limited or post-surgical patients - ideal when traditional heavy strengthening is not yet appropriate.

  • Enhances circulation and metabolic response - stimulates muscle growth factors and improves blood flow efficiency.

  • Reduces joint and tendon strain - delivers high training benefits with minimal mechanical load.

All BFR sessions are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist to ensure proper application, safety, and optimal outcomes.
